Summary: Prematurity is a social problem with a constantly increasing value. A proper visual function in preterm born children is the matter of a persisting ophthalmological care from very first days of newborns’ life. The aim of the study was to present the available electrophysiological examinations used in objective measurements of the visual function in children with the history of prematurity. Changed results achieved by the means of electrophysiological examinations are the functional expression of the structural immaturity of the visual system. The initial immaturity of central nervous system determines secondary altered development of the visual cortex reflecting in modified maturation of the electrophysiological response. Electrophysiological tests percolate up as valuable objective examinations of the visual system function supplemental to a basic ophthalmological investigation detecting the structural anomalies.
