Summary: Mucous membrane pemphigoid is a chronic cicatrizing autoimmune disease of the mucous membranes or skin. Ocular manifestation involves up to 75% of patients and presents as a chronic, recurrent, proceeding conjunctivitis with subepithelial fibrosis. The end-stage of the disease is characterized by ankyloblepharon and surface keratinization. Medical treatment of the ocular cicatrical pemphigoid is difficult, protracted and not very effective. It involves not only local treatment but also oral immunosupressiive and immunomodulatory therapy.
