Summary: Humans are the only natural reservoir of herpes simplex virus. Transmission occurs through direct contact with infected secretions (saliva, tears, genital secretions) or active skin lesions. Increased emphasis is now being placed by the guideline authors on the need to simplify the classification system of herpes simplex virus keratitis for a more consistent approach to the choice of proper therapy that will be applicable by any practicing doctor. Risk factors for recurrence herpes simplex virus keratitis include: herpes simplex virus virulence, decreased immunity, age, atopy, prostaglandin analogs use, local trauma after laser surgery and surgery.
