Summary: Central serous chorioretinopathy is characterized by limited serous retinal detachment in the macula due to leakage from choriocapillars, secondary to focal (less frequently diffuse) damage to the retinal pigment epithelium. Smoking, taking corticosteroids, stress, pregnancy, hypertension and personality type A are mentioned in the literature as predisposing factors for the development of the disease. The etiology of this disease is not fully understood and no causal treatment is possible. Attention is drawn to the potentially important role of mineralocorticoid receptors and eplenerone treatment of this disease. The results confirm that it is a potentially effective form of treatment that does not have serious, long-term side effects.
