Devic’s Syndrome

Summary: Devic?s syndrome (Devic?s disease, neuromyelitis optica) is a demyelinization disease which is characterized by an attack or attacks of optic neuritis and myelitis without clinical or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) evidence of brain involvement. The course of the disease is often fulminating. Unilateral or bilateral loss of vision combined with a spinal cord dysfunction are typical symptoms of Devic?s disease. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain and spinal cord and determination of NMO-IgG antibody in blood serum are the diagnostic forms. Causal treatment does not exist.
