Summary: Purpose: to determine the type and frequency of ocular changes in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Material and methods: Routine ophthalmological examination was performed in 200 eyes of 100 patients with AD. The results were compared to 200 eyes of 100 normal healthy controls. Results: In the eyes of patients with AD significantly higher incidence of glaucoma (p <0.0001), age-related macular degeneration (AMD) (p <0.04) and unspecific color vision deficit (p <0.002) was detected. Many patients had no suitable spectacle correction for distance (p<0.0001) as well as they were not referred to cataract surgery.
Conclusions: Patients with AD should be referred to general ophthalmologist for regular ophthalmological examination because of higher incidence of treatable disorders like glaucoma or AMD. Optimal visual acuity allows them for better functioning in the environment and indirectly can slow the progression of the disease.
