Summary: Purpose:On the basis of the literature and own experience to show current knowledge concerning with causes, diagnosis and treatment possibilities of optic neuritis.
Conclusion: Acute demyelinating optic neuritis (ON) is the initial presentation in approximately 20% of cases of multiple sclerosis. Visual function improves spontaneously over weeks and within one year 93% have recovered to a visual acuity of at least 0.5. Treatment with high – dose corticosteroids may accelerate visual recovery, but has little impact on long-term visual outcome. The 10-year risk of developing multiple sclerosis in the ON patients and no white matter lesions in magnetic resonance image was 22% but 56% with one or more lesions. Visual evoked potentials are usually delayed in optic nerve demyelination and are very useful in identifying occult optic nerve dysfunction.
