Summary: According to The Global Burden of Disease 1996 ranking, diabetes is ranked 2nd after ischaemic heart disease. Over 285 million people worldwide suffer from diabetes in 2010. World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that in 2025 the amount of patients suffering from diabetes will be 170% bigger than in 1995 and in 2030 will reach 380 million people. The ocular manifestation of this disease is diabetic retinopathy. It is the main cause of blindness and poor vision between aged patients in developed countries. To diagnose the diabetes it is necessary to perform following tests: fundoscopy, fluorescein angiography and OCT. Laser therapy is the essential way of diabetic retinopathy treatment.
In 2006 an estimated 1.6 million services (worth app. 42.6 m PLN) were executed for patients with diabetes. As far as opthalmic services in angiography area are concerned the National Health Fund (NFZ) spent 5.79 m PLN (and the following year – 1.27 m PLN less). Refunds for photocoagulation reached in 2006 1.25 m PLN (and the following year merely 33.6 k PLN more). The greatest funds from NFZ (over 160 m PLN in 2006 and 100 m PLN in 2007) were disposed to vitrectomy. At the same time, there is a smaller demand on drugs or ophthalmic services (combined to diabetes treatment) and a growth in number of patients suffering from diagnosed diabetes.
