Summary: Purpose: The aim of the study was to evaluate the etiology of uveitis and its types in children and adolescents.
Materials and Methods: The retrospective analysis of 60 children treated due to uveitis, in the period of time from 2001 to 2011 in the Department of Pediatric Ophthalmology of the Medical University of Lodz was performed. The children underwent the complete ophthalmological examination. The laboratory testing and consultation of other specialist were performed where needed.
Results: In our studied group posterior uveitis (in 55% of children) associated with ocular Toxoplasmosis was the most frequent form of the disease. 30% of our patients were treated due to anterior uveitis, which was mailny caused by juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Intermediate uveitis was diagnosed in the 15% of our studied group and the inflammatory factors and rheumatologic factors were not found.
In general, etiology of uveitis was established in 67% of the patients sample, in the remaining cases, the etiology was unknown.
Conclusions: Uveitis in children and adolescence the most often is associated with its posterior part and ocular Toxoplasmosis is predominant in this type of the disease. The intermediate uveitis is frequently diagnosed as idiopathic and its treatment appears to be long lasting and problematic. It is possible to evaluate the exact etiology of uveitis in the majority of cases.
