Summary: Objective: To present the role of the electrophysiological tests in assessment of the retina and the optic nerve in the diagnosis of retinal diseases associated with nystagmus in children.
Material and Methods: Based on the literature data and our own experience following diseases were described: cone dystrophy, achromatopsia, albinism, congenital night blindness, Leber amaurosis. The diagnosis of these conditions is based on electrophysiological examinations: flash electroretinogram – ERG, and visual evoked potentials – VEP (ISCEV standard).
Conclusions: Electrophysiological assessment of the retina and the optic nerve are very useful in the early differential diagnosis of visual impairment in the eyes of children with reduced visual function and associated by nystagmus.
