Summary: Demodex is a genus of tiny parasitic mites that are common in many species of animals and humans. Two species known to infest humans are Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis. These parasites are found in the follicular infundibulum (D. folliculorum), and sebaceous or meibomian glands (D. brevis). Demodex species are normally found in greater number around the nose, eyes, forehead, chin and the nasolabial groove. In one hair follicle can exist up to 25 D. folliculorum individuals, burrowed head down near the root of the eyelash. D. folliculorum males measure 280 ± 52 μm and females 294 ± 58 μm. D. brevis is shorter than D. folliculorum males measure 166 ± 19 μm and females 208 ± 27 μm. Infestation by Demodex sp. is known as “demodicosis”. Demodex mites can cause blepharitis and may play a role in pathogenesis of rosacea.
