Summary: Dry eye syndrome is the most common eye disease, caused by either decreased tear secretion, its dyscrasias or increased tear film evaporation. Patients with this syndrome can be divided into two groups: aqueous-deficient including Sjögren’s syndrome and lacrimal gland disease and the second group – non-Sjögren’s syndrome with excessive evaporation resulting from deficiency of the mucin layer or from abnormalities of the lipid tear layer caused by blepharitis or rosacea. Typical symptoms of keratoconjuncivitis sicca are dryness, foreign body sensation, sandy-gritty eye irritation, visual disturbance, redness of the eyes, light sensitivity and watering. The main standard treatment for dry eye syndrome is artificial tears, however this is not sufficient. The recent research indicates that blood derived products may fulfil important role in therapies for dry eye syndrome. The major and obvious advantages of hemoderivaties such as autologous serum, eye-platelet-rich plasma, plasma-rich in growth factors are preservative-free composition, autologous character and effectivity.
Conclusion: The literature reviewed reveals that hemoderatives seems to be reliable and effective therapeutic approach to promote ocular surface regeneration in dry eye syndrome.
