Summary: Aim: To assess the efficacy of nepafenac eye drops – a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent in the treatment of macular edema associated with various intraocular conditions.
Methods: The study involved six patients (6 eyes) with macular edema due to uveitis associated with IgA glomerulopathy (n=1), branch retinal vein occlusion (n=1), exudative age-related macular degeneration (n=1), central serous choroidopathy (n=1), cataract surgery (n=1) and retinal detachment surgery (n=1). Patients were treated with 0.1% nepafenac eye drops 3 times per day for 4 weeks. The baseline examination included: best corrected visual acuity, ophthalmoscopy, central retinal thickness assessment in optical coherent tomography. The same investigations were performed 4 weeks after therapy initiation.
Results: Baseline best corrected visual acuity ranged from 0.1 to 0.8 (Snellen) and central retinal thickness from 321 µm to 530 µm. In all cases treatment led to improvement in best corrected visual acuity and central retinal thickness reduction. At the end-point of the study the mean best corrected visual acuity improved by 2 lines on Snellen charts, and the mean central retinal thickness reduction was 151 µm. All patients did not developed neither local nor systemic complications associated with 0.1% nepafenac eye drops treatment.
Conclusions: The results of the study indicate that topical treatment with anti-inflammatory non-steroidal agents are beneficial in terms of the clinical course of the macular edema associated with various intraocular disorders. In our patients the improvement in best corrected visual acuity and reduction of central retinal thickness was observed in all cases.
