Summary: Age-related macular degeneration – is an example of diseases of affluence which occurs more commonly among the aging population in the developed countries. The need for more diagnostic options, better treatment and early lesions detection has provoked the progress, particularly in the area of diagnostic and therapeutic methods. This overview has been prepared to describe the basic diagnostic methods: optical coherence tomography, fluorescein angiography, indocyanine green angiography and less common techniques such as: macuscope, microperymetry, autofluorescence used for the diagnosis and monitoring the lesions among patients with age-related macular degeneration. The work states which methods should be used in the early stages of this disease to confirm the diagnosis and which methods are indicated in more advanced age-related macular degeneration to monitor the progress of lesions and qualify for treatment.
