Summary: Aim: To assess the utility of different optical coherence tomography methods in glaucoma diagnosis and monitoring.
Material and Methods: The study was performed in 75 patients (including 45 children) in whom in the diagnosis of early glaucoma and monitoring of progression of the disease the measurements of visual field, topography of optic nerve head, thickness of peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer and thickness of ganglion cells complex in the macula were used.
Results: In patients with early glaucoma the most sensitive method of evaluation of retinal ganglion cell loss was macular ganglion cells complex. Less sensitive were: peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer, optic nerve head and visual field measurements, respectively. In monitoring disease progression the sensitivity was in the order: ganglion cells complex, retinal nerve fiber layer, optic nerve head and visual filed measurements, respectively.
Conclusions:The results of this study indicate that ganglion cells complex is the most sensitive method for evaluation of ganglion cell loss both in early diagnosis and in monitoring glaucoma progression. Ganglion cells complex is especially useful for glaucoma evaluation in children.
