Summary: This paper intends to present some accomodative disturbances which cause difficulties in reading and should be differentiated from dyslexia. Reading problems are often linked with accomodative disorders, most often caused by none or wrongly corrected refractive errors. In 1958 Costenbader first differentiated non-refractive accommodative convergence excess with high AC/A ratio into two types: the hyperkinetic and hypoaccomodative one. Clinical data of 15 patients with non-refractive accomodative convergence excess were presented. Hyperkinetic and hypoaccomodative patients need bifocals to treat convergence excess and to avoid reading difficulties.
Keywords: convergence excess, AC/A ratio, bifocals.
