The Impact of Cationic Nanoemulsion based Eye Drops (Cationorm®) on Corneal Fluorescein Staining and Tear Break-up Time in Patients with Dry Eye Disease

Summary: Purpose: Evaluation of corneal fluorescein staining and tear break-up time among patients with dry eye disease after 30 and 90 days of topical use of cationic nanoemulsion based eye drops (Cationorm®, Santen Oy).
Methods: In this observational study 54 patients (26 men and 28 women) with dry eye symptoms started using topically cationic nanoemulsion three times daily for 90 days period. Corneal fluorescein staining (according to Oxford scale) and tear break-up time tests were performed in all patients at baseline, at 30 day and 90 day of the study.
Results: The majority of patients had the IV degree of corneal fluorescein staining according to Oxford scale (79.6%) at baseline, at day 30–63.0% of subjects presented III degree of staining and at day 90–59.3% of the studied group showed II degree. The average tear break-up time was 5.2 ± 0.3 seconds at baseline, 6.3 ± 0.3 seconds at day 30 and 9.5 ± 0.6 seconds at day 90.
1. Studied cationic nanoemulsion based eye drops (Cationorm ®) lower mean percentage of severe corneal fluorescein staining score and elongate mean tear break-up time in the evaluated group of dry eye disease patients.
2. Cationic nanoemulsion based eye drops may improve tear stability and ocular surface status in patients with dry eye disease.
