Anesthesia in Cataract Surgery

Summary: Authors describe different types of anesthesia used in cataract surgery. Types of local anesthesia include topical, topical and anterior chamber, periocular (peribulbar) and Tenon subcapsular one. Indications and technical aspects of local and also general anesthesia are presented, playing attention especially to advantages of topical and periocular ones. Individual selection of the type of anesthesia, which depends on surgery method, patient?s age, general physical and mental condition is significant. Important role plays proper premedication considering associated systemic diseases and persistent therapy. Despite cataract surgery has a low risk of complications, the life functions monitoring and anesthesiological care are required during each operation.
