Summary: In recent years, owing to better postoperative effects, phacoemulsification has become a leading technique of cataract surgery. Its application, however, may pose some problems in treating white cataract mainly due to insufficient retroillumination. It is particularly relevant during capsulorhexis, critical in subsequent stages of the process, during which visualization may be improved with the dyes application. Many dyes exist that can be used during cataract surgery which enable the implementation of phacoemulsification in the cases earlier reserved for extracapsular cataract extraction. Apart from the benefits, their application may have some side effects. The following article has the aim to present dyes used in cataract surgery, their potential toxicity and other possible undesirable effects, as well as application methods. The use of dyes provides the surgeon an equally effective alternative, i.e. phacoemulsification, instead of extracapsular cataract extraction in the cases of insufficient visualization. With mature cataract, however, phacoemulsification may result in various complications, since those associated with insufficient retroillumination have been greatly reduced due to the application of dyes.
