Summary: Aim: To estimate
the progress in cataract surgery in the province of Łódź
in years 2002-2006.
Materials and methods: The available data,
concerning cataract surgery in the province of Łódź,
were analyzed, and compared to adequate data from
another European countries and from United States of
America.
Results: The number of cataract surgeries
increased between 2002 and 2006 from 6080 to 7772 (28%).
The percentage of surgeries performed with
phacoemulsification increased from 30% to 85% in this
period of time, as well as the use of foldable lenses –
from 15% to 92%.
Conclusions:
1. The increase in number of cataract surgeries in the
province of Łódź between 2002 and 2006 was small.
2. The percentage of surgeries performed with
phacoemulsification and the use of foldable IOLs
increased very quickly in this period.
3. However, the total number of cataract surgeries per
million citizens, and the percentage of
phacoemulsification is still much lower than
in such countries like Sweden, Czech Republic or United
States of America.
