The Most Common Causes of Blindness in Europe

Summary: About 161 millions people worldwide are visually impaired, 37 millions of them are blind. Most people with visual impairment are older, and females are more at risk at every age, in every part of the world. The number of pepole blinded by infectious diseases has been grately reduced, but age related impairment is increasing. Cataract remains the leading cause of blindness globaly, but AMD is the most common in the most developed countries. In different parts of Europe there is a variation of predominant causes of blindness and visual impairment. As the population is getting old, and the global number of cataract extraction with intra-ocular lens implantation increases, AMD becomes the most common cause of blindness in developed countries.
