Efficacy and Tolerance Evaluation of the 0.1% Diclofenac Eye Drops Preservatives Free in Patients Treated Surgically Due to Cataract

Summary: Aim: Efficacy and Local Tolerance Evaluation of the 0.1% Diclofenac Preservatives Free Used in Patients in Perioperative Period.
Material and Methods: 36 patients (36 eyes), 29 females, 7 males in mean age 72±25 years (55-90 years), in whom cataract phacoemulsification procedure was performed were included in the study. Patients enclosed to the study were asked for a consent and on examination except cataract no other ocular surface disorders were detected. Dicloabak® formulation was administered to both eyes 5 times a day one day before surgery, and than for 7 days postoperatively and 4 times a day until day 28 following surgery. During postoperative period following subjective symptoms were evaluated: irritation (burning sensation), stinging, itching, dryness or foreign body sensation, for which symptom intensification scale was determined - as very intense, intense, moderate and small and objective evaluation in the slit-lamp – evaluated also according to the scale: hyperaemia, tyndalization, inflammation reduction. Evaluation was performed on 1st, 7th and 28th postoperative day.
Results: The most frequent symptom reported by patients was burning sensation. Symptom intensification was following: small – in 21 patients (81%), moderate – in 4 patients (15%). Only 1 % patient (4%) reported symptom intensification as intense and strenuous and due to that medicine has been changed.
Biomicroscopic evaluation confirmed good tolerance of preservatives free eye drops and showed good efficacy in postoperative inflammatory response inhibition.
Conclusions: Results of the above mentioned study allow us to state, that preservative free diclofenac is effective medicine in inflammatory response inhibition associated with cataract surgery and good subjective tolerance. Lack of preservative causes, that it is mild formula for ocular surface, what is a significant therapeutic advantage.
