Summary: There are large number of photosensitizers in nature. One of the most important feature of these is the ability to selective polling in the pathological tissues. Due to their properties there were intensive studies conducted on their use in ophthalmology, e.g. in PDT – Photodynamic Therapy. Nowadays, PDT – Photodynamic Therapy with Verteporfin (Visudyne) dye use is one of the method in the treatment of subfoveal choroidal neovascularization (CNV) in age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Scientists sustained research on new photosensitizers which will be more selective for endothelial cells and cause less side effects. Some of them are under preclinical studies. The aim of this paper is to present few of those photosensitizers. It seems that some of them will be used with some success in photodynamic therapy in the near future.
