Summary: The Ophthalmological Emergency Service is a 24h service dedicated to all cases requiring urgent ophthalmological first aid. The study was a retrospective comparison of number and clinical characteristic of ophthalmological emergency cases admitted to the Department of Ophthalmology in Warsaw in the years 1998 and 2005. Hospitalized patients were classified into one of 3 groups: I group – patients with injuries, II group – patients with non-traumatic anterior segment diseases, III group – patients with non-traumatic posterior segment diseases. The total number of emergency patients requiring ophthalmological consultation was 4757 in the year 1998 and 6668 in the year 2005 (40.2% increase). In 1998 – 106 cases required hospitalization and in 2005 – 105 cases (decrease by 0.6% in comparison to all cases admitted). In the year 2005 and year 1998 we found the following differences in clinical profile of patients: the drop in number of ophthalmological injuries (18.3%), the double rise in number of non-traumatic diseases of anterior segment of the eye in the year 2005, the rise in number of non-traumatic diseases of posterior segment of the eye (4.2%).
