Summary: Shaken baby syndrome is a specific type of child abuse involving intracranial and intrabulbar findings.
Aim of the study: The aim of the study was to investigate the ocular changes and associated intracranial lesions in shaken baby syndrome.
Material and Methods: The study group consisted of three children, two male and one female, admitted to the hospital due to dyspnea and generalized muscle hypotonicity. All children had ophthalmic examination with detailed indirect ophthalmoscopy and Ret-Cam II documentation. Head imaging was ordered. Markers of neuroinfection and coagulopathy were analyzed.
Results: In all children multiple, diffuse pre- and intraretinal hemorrhages, extending to the periphery were observed as the result of shaking. Retinal hemorrhagic changes occurred bilaterally in two children and unilaterally in one patient. Computed tomography showed subarachnoid cavity extension.
In one severely injured patient, significant brain edema and extensive pericerebral bleeding were diagnosed.
Conclusions: Ophthalmologic examination is a significant element of clinical diagnostics, enables correct diagnosis and adequate treatment of SBS.
