Summary: Dyschromatopsias could be observed in retinal diseases, abnormalities of the optic nerve (n. II) or visual cortex. Disorders of color vision may be a symptom of neuroophthalmological diseases running with neuropathy of the optic nerve: inflammatory, ischemic, toxic, compression, post-traumatic, radiation, paraneoplastic. They may also accompany: pseudotumor, vascular disorders, migraine and neurodegenerative diseases. The cause of acquired maculopathies could be degenerative diseases, inflammatory, vascular, toxic, retinal dystrophies and others.
Acquired dyschromatopsias, unlike the congenital, may affect one or both eyes and occur with varying intensity. There is usually progression and some of pathological changes observed in funduscopy. Dyschromatopsias are often accompanied by other symptoms of ophthalmic and neurological disorders. Acquired macular diseases causing dyschromatopsias in blue-yellow axis and changes in the optic nerve disorder in the red-green axis.
Acquired color vision disturbances have been classified by Verriest: protan-, deuteran-and tritan-like. Additionally, we can distinguish acquired color perception changes, which include: erytropsis, ksantopsis and chloropsis.
The diagnostic tests are chosen appropriately for age, level of intelligence, visual acuity. Farnsworth-Munsell 100 hue test enables the assessment of the nature and progression of acquired color vision disorders. Information about optic nerve’s condition and the exclusion of the simulation provides an additional electrophysiological diagnostic.
In the case of an incorrect perception of color, neurological and ophthalmological diagnostic is necessary. Early diagnosis of the cause allows treatment what is the most important in preservation of vision.
