Summary: Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is an idiopathic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system. Bilateral optic neuritis is a common feature of NMO. Complete visual loss, pain with eye movement and incomplete recovery are typical. Distinction between NMO and sclerosis multiplex should be done in cooperation with neurologists as there are different treatment strategies in both entities.
