Summary: Blepharospasm is one of the most frequent form of focal dystonia. The clinical presentation consists of eye burning, itching and increased blinking at the early stages, following severe eyelid contractions with functional blindness in approximately 30% of patients. It interferes with everyday life, mostly reading, using computer, driving and moving in the open air as bright light exacerbates movements. Despite that contractions are easily visible at later stages, this "sensory" period preceding the abnormal movements usually results in confusion and inappropriate diagnosis (e.g. dry eye, conjuctivitis etc). In many cases proper diagnosis is usually delayed from the first symptoms onset and takes years. It is important to diagnose patients earlier as the very effective therapy, widely accepted as the first line treatment (and in fact the only one before surgical treatment) with botulinum toxin injections use is commonly available.
