Summary: Introduction: The aim of the study was to estimate the visual acuity, intraocular pressure, the mean endothelium cell density and the length of anatomical axis of eyeballs in children and teenagers after traumatic cataract extraction with artificial intraocular posterior chamber lens implantation.
Material and Methods: The baseline examination covered 77 children (58 boys and 19 girls). They underwent surgery at the age of 2-18 years, mean 10.1 (± 4.3). In long-term observation, mean 41.5 months (± 17.6). 46 children from the initial group (35 boys and 11 girls) were evaluated. The patients were divided in 2 age groups: younger 2-7 years and older 8-18 years. We evaluated following criteria: distance and near BCVA, intraocular pressure, length of anatomical axis of eyeball, corneal endothelium cell density.
Results: The obtained results were statistically analyzed p(α)<0.05. Statistically essential better far and near visual acuity during all the periods of observation in the older children group was found. The mean values of intraocular pressure of the operated eye in both the older and younger children didn't fundamentally differ the during observation period. The analysis of mean cornea endothelium cell density in the age groups didn't show statistically significant difference. However, symptomatically greater increase in anatomical axis length of the operated eyeballs was noticed in the older children group.
Conclusions: The eyes after trauma in case of older children prognosticate better, as for as distant and near acuity improvement is concerned because the probability of developing amblyopia decreases with age. No influence of the children age on intraocular pressure as well as on postoperative endothelium density was found. The mean length of eyeball anatomical axis of the operated eye depends on age and eyeball development should be taken into consideration while calculating the implant power.
