Summary: Objective: To
evaluate the irradiation influence that lead to
consecutive glaucoma development following plaque
radiotherapy for choroidal and ciliary body melanoma.
Methods: Review of the 562 patients treated in
our Department between 1998-2002. All patients received
brachytherapy (106Ru or 125I applicators). The dose for
the apex was 80 –120 Gy, and 386 Gy for the sclera. The
average application time was 3.5 days. The follow-up was
2-5 years (average 3.5).
Results: Radiation related complications appeared
in 480 patients (86%). In 408 cases complications
involved anterior segment of the eye. Sixty five
patients showed consecutive glaucoma (11.6%), 50 iris
neovascularization (8.9%), 25 irydocyclitis (4.4%).
Conclusion: consecutive glaucoma appeared more
often after iodine brachytherapy, in large tumors
located in ciliary body.
Keywords: radiation complications, consecutive glaucoma, brachytherapy, choroidal melanoma.
