Summary: Apoptosis is one of the main processes underlying neurodegenerative diseases and can contribute to the retinal ganglion cells loss in glaucoma. We already know several modulators (Fas, Bcl-2, Bax, Bcl-xl) which can regulate cell apoptosis in the optic nerve head. The aim of our study was evaluation of Fas immunoexpression in optic nerve axons in the eyeballs which were enucleated due to the absolute glaucoma and severe injury. We examined a series of 17 eyeballs which were enucleated due to absolute glaucoma with ophthalmalgia and series of 8 eyeballs (control group) which were enucleated because of extensive trauma in 1994-2005 in the Department of Ophthalmology Medical University of Białystok. The samples were immunostained with human antibody for Fas. Immunoexpession was evaluated in retrolaminar region of the optic nerve head. In our study, Fas immunoexpression was stronger in the axons with absolute glaucoma than in trauma group (p=0.0084). The result of our study might suggest that Fas plays a significant proapoptotic role in optic nerve axons in the stage of absolute glaucoma.
