Summary: Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a major cause of severe visual loss and legal blindness in people older than 50 years of age in the Western world. The main reason for severe visual loss in AMD patients is the development of choroidal neovascularization (CNV). PHP is a visual field test which helps monitoring AMD patients for early detection of visual disturbances linked to the AMD progression. PHP technology is based on a visual phenomenon known as hyperacuity. Hyperacuity is defined as the ability to perceive minute differences in the relative spatial localization of two or more stimuli. PHP test appears to differentiate between CNV and intermediate AMD, and thus may be potentially beneficial in monitoring intermediate AMD patients for the development of CNV.

Keywords: preferential hyperacuity perimetry, age-related macular degeneration, choroidal neovascularization.
