Summary: In a review a current opinion on the toxic effects of topical antiglaucoma medications on the ocular surface were presented. The impact of both the active ingredients and preservatives (benzalkonium chloride and the newly developed preservatives) on cornea and conjunctiva were discussed. Finally, the findings of clinical trials on switching from preserved to preservative-free therapy were mentioned.
