Summary: Changes in hormone profile and in metabolism that occur physiologically during pregnancy can affect mother’s eyes functioning. Ocular changes may be transient or permanent. It may be physiological, pathological or be a modification of pre-existing conditions. The immunomodulatory effect of pregnancy on autoimmune diseases, including uveitis, has been noticed by many researchers. The immunosuppressive effects and high steroid levels present in pregnant women may cause improvement of non-infectious uveitis but there is a risk of postpartum exacerbation. We review the changes in uveitis activity in the course of multiple sclerosis, idiopathic anterior uveitis, Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease, Behçet disease. It’s also not so rare to see infectious changes in posterior segment in following disorders: toxoplasmosis, herpes simplex virus (HSV) or cytomegalovirus (CMV) induced chorioretinitis. Knowledge of these ocular changes during pregnancy can help to choose the best treatment.
