Summary: Wiktor Feliks Szokalski (1811-1891) is considered to be the founder of Polish ophthalmology. He was born in Warsaw, where he finished his secondary school and started medical studies at the doctor’s faculty of the University of Warsaw. As a third year student he took part in November Uprising. He was given Virtuti Militari Cross for the heroic help to the insurgents.
After the uprising fell sharing the fate of others he was forced to leave the country. So he graduated in a small German town, Giessen. He settled down in Paris, where he worked in a clinic of a famous ophthalmologist doctor Siechel. Then he started his scientific and publishing activity. In Paris he founded The Society of German Doctors and he became its’ first chairman. He also took part in political mission organized in Germany by prince Czartoryski.
After 23 years, in 1853 he was allowed to come back to Poland. Using his abilities he started to work as not only an ophthalmologist but also as a lecturer in Medical- Surgery Academy and then at Doctor’s Faculty of the Main School. He was also a permanent secretary of Medical Warsaw Society.
His life was mostly connected with the Ophthalmic Institute which was the first ophthalmological hospital in Poland and one of the first in Europe. Firstly Szokalski worked as a consultant and from 1858 as a principal doctor.
Supported by the guardian prince Tadeusz Lubomirski, Szokalski developed the Institute in all respects, which due to him became a perfect carrying and medical center as well as the place scientific development where ophthalmologists were educated Ophthalmic Institute worked until 1944 when it was destroyed during Warsaw Uprising.
Nowadays, hospital where the authors worked is continuing the tradition of the Institute.
