Summary: Kazimierz Noiszewski was born on the 11th of September 1859 in Vilnius. He died suddenly, unexpectedly on the 5th of July 1930 in Warsaw and was buried on old Powązki Cemetery.
Following January National Uprising his family estate was confiscated by tsarist authorities and his father was sent to Tula, and his wife with 4-years old Kazimierz and two siblings accompanied him.
Kazimierz Noiszewski graduated grammar school in Orle in 1877, and in 1878 in Kaługa he achieved golden medal matriculation, following which he went for medical school in Moscow.
He got medical doctor diploma, also with honors in 1883. Further education doctor Noiszewski completed in Cracow, Vienna and Paris, and then he started his own private practice in ophthalmology in Dyneburg, where he gained great medical fame. Simultaneously he took an active part in Research Association and published multiple papers in Polish and foreign literature.
In 1899 he received PhD diploma in Petersburg and in 1908 he became Associate Professor. Following that, for another 10 years in Petersburg Military Academy he has been lecturing ocular physiology and pathology.
When Poland regain independence, in 1918, he has been organizing ophthalmology departments in dissuaded Vilnius and Warsaw Universities. He was running Warsaw Department of Ophthalmology until his retirement in 1929, conducing it’s clinical and research development and progress. He was the organizer of the 1st Congress of the Polish Ophthalmologists, the founder of the Polish Society of Ophthalmologists and creator and founder of the Klinika Oczna journal, which has been issued until today. Professor’s attainments consists of 183 papers in ophthalmology and also vision psychology including articles, scripts, books, surgical papers and inventions, e.g. “artificial eye“ (electrophthalm).
Some of his students were: prof. Melanowski, prof. Sobański and dr Galewska.
Professor had 11 children, from whom the oldest daughter Bogumiła was also a medical doctor, but also later became a nun, murdered by Nazis in 1942 for helping Polish soldiers and Jews and later beatified by the Pope John Paul II in 1999.
