Summary: Professor Witold Starkiewicz lived between 1932-1978 years. In 1946 he obtained doctor’s degree. He became the assistant professor in 1948, the professor in 1950, and full professor in 1957. On the 1st of August 1948 he assumed a position of the head of The Ophthalmology Clinic in Szczecin. He directed the clinic until 1972. During his scientific activity he wrote 111 scientific papers, 35 in foreign languages. He also elaborated and published 4 monographies and 2 textbooks. On prof. Starkiewicz’s application, the Institute of Patophysiology of the Eye was created in the Department. He was a promotor of 19 doctor’s dissortations and 2 postdoctoral qualifications. Prof. Starkiewicz’s the most important scientific successes was the description of the basis of psychophysiology of vision, which he named „kinestetic theory of vision”. The theory was a basis of the localization method of strabismus treatment. His next success was the electorophthalm. Professor Witold Starkiewicz was a brilliant man and teacher. He educated a lot of excellent ophthalmologists. We can call him an Author of The Ophthalmologic School in Szczecin.
