Summary: In the view of the spread of vitreoretinal procedures it has become an important issue to precisely evaluate the effects of treatment. Unfortunately, ophthalmoscopy in such cases is often not possible to perform due to poor or lack of optical media transparency. The only method available in that circumstances to assess posterior segment of the eye remains ultrasound. Interpretation of ultrasound images after vitreoretinal surgery is, however, difficult, due to applied biomaterials. Both silicone sponges and bands as well as vitreous substitutes (gas, silicone oil) change the image of the posterior segment of the eyeball, causing the occurrence of characteristic echoes. This paper presents practical tips on ultrasound examination in eyes after vitreoretinal surgery, including eyes filled with vitreous substitutes and after scleral buckling.
