Summary: The corneal endothelium is the inner surface of the cornea and its primary function is to maintain corneal transparency by controlling the hydration of the stromal layer. The ability to visualize and estimate the corneal endothelium in vivo and ex vivo finds an important application in examinations of patient’s cornea and eye banking. Described methods allow making a qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the corneal endothelial cells. Techniques for endothelial visualization are used generally to monitor different corneal diseases and before and after eye surgery. Endothelium evaluation has to be performed in the cornea banks before grafting. According to this estimation the donor cornea is qualified for the cornea transplantation.
