Importance of the Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer Examination in Various Ocular Diseases

Summary: Rapid development of ophthalmology observed in the recent years is connected with the introduction of modern state-of-the-art devices and diagnostic methods into clinical practice. The article describes current data available from the literature, which shows that retinal nerve fiber layer (retinal nerve fiber layer – RNFL) measurements are important in diagnostics and monitoring of many ocular diseases. These diseases are e.g.: intraocular hypertension, glaucoma, central retinal artery occlusion, branch retinal artery occlusion, neuropathies and neurodegenerative diseases (Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis), developmental anomalies of the optic disc, anterior ischemic optic neuropathy and some others.
