Results of the Strabismus Treatment after Pleoptics and Occlusive Therapy Along with Ortopthics

Summary: The aim of this paper is to describe the role of pleoptics and occlusive therapy along with orthoptics on the outcome of the strabismus treatment.
Material and Methods: A total number of 191 children aged above 3 months (97 boys and 94 girls) were examined: 66 children without strabismus and with undeveloped fixation, 68 children with strabismus and macular fixation, 57 children with strabismus and extramacular fixation. Pleoptics along with occlusive therapy according to the localization method with prismatic lens correction and orthoptics were used in the treatment of children with strabismus. In every child fixation, eyes alignment as well as the angle of squint at the age of 4 months and visual acuity and binocular vision for near and far sight in open space and using synoptophore (fusion and stereopsis) at age 3 to 6 years was conducted.
Results: At the age of 5 months, children with undeveloped fixation and without strabismus after pleoptic treatment achieved proper macular fixation. After pleoptics use children aged 3 to 6 years achieved quicker improvement of fixation and visual acuity (0.6, 0.9) and a higher percentage of binocular vision (average 54.00%). In comparison with occlusive therapy, visual acuity was (0.2, 0.5) and the percentage of binocular vision was on average 32.70%.
Conclusions: Pleoptics have a positive influence on the improvement of fixation and visual acuity as well as the development of binocular vision in individuals with strabismus and in individuals with undeveloped fixation. Occlusion does not improve eccentric fixation. The effects of pleoptic treatment are achieved in a shorter period of time as compared to the use of occlusive therapy only.
