Summary: Conservative glaucoma treatment in children over many years is causing much controversy. Widely accepted opinion of specialists in pediatric ophthalmology is to provide surgical treatment as soon as possible. However, very often in the period of preparation for surgery or in the process of diagnosis confirmation, we are forced to implement intraocular pressure-lowering drugs, because of the immediate need to reduce high intraocular pressure. Even though most drugs used to lower IOP in children are not registered for the treatment in this age group, they have been used for many years. In this article we present results of PANDA study – a global, multicenter, randomized, double-blind, 3 phase, 12 weeks long study to investigate the efficacy and safety of latanoprost in children.
Results and Conclusions: Latanoprost stronger than timolol reduces intraocular pressure in non-primary congenital glaucoma (non-PCG). In primary congenital glaucoma (PCG) is as effective as timolol. Latanoprost does not increase blood pressure, heart rate or body temperature in children. It is effective and safe even in young children.
