Summary: The majority of observed cataract cases are age-related, due to the prolongation of life expectancy, but human lens opacifications often reflect the general condition of the body. Cataract cases associated with systemic metabolic disorders are extremely rare. The vast majority of those cases are of interest to pediatric ophthalmologist, however the general ophthalmologist should also be aware of them. The morphology, time of development and inheritance of lens opacification along with systemic features, may indicate the etiology of the disease. Thus accelerates inception of the treatment and improves prognosis. Delayed detection of the disorder often leads to irreversible changes, that concern not only visual acuity, but even might be life-threatening.
