Summary: Objective: Evaluation of nasolacrimal duct probing effectiveness in children with congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction symptoms.
Material and Methods: The data on probing procedures conducted in our hospital within the last 24 months have been collected. The analysis comprised 677 eyes in 636 children at the average age of 7.5 months, in whom nasolacrimal duct irrigation and probing were performed due to its’ congenital obstruction. Before the treatment all children underwent pediatric and aenesthesiological screening. The probing was conducted in topical anasthesia in the operating theatre. After probing the lacrimal duct its’patency was tested through the superior duct.
Results: In the treated group of 677 eyes, success has been achieved in 597 eyes (88.2%), in 80 cases (11.8%) patiens required another treatment due to negative results of patency testing. After reprobing the lacrimal duct patency was restored in all children.
Conclusions: Lacrimal duct probing is an effective method of congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction treatment in children from 3 to 7 months of age.
