Summary: Coats’ disease is rare unilateral vasculopathy, in which different retinal telangiectasias and lipid exudates are predominant in the ophthalmological picture. This entity when untreated leads to retinal detachment, neovascular glaucoma and consequently phthisis of the eye globe. Coats’ disease management include laser photocoagulation, cryotherapy, or retino-vitreal procedures in advanced cases. Recently there have been trials with the intravitreal injections of anti–VEGF agents, that in many cases appeared to be effective management of this difficult disorder.
In our article we present case report of anti-VEGF treatment in a 11–years old boy with Coats’ disease. At the admission to the Department of Pediatric Ophthalmology he presented with very low visual acuity (1/50) in his right eye and diffuse abnormalities in ophthalmoscopic assessment. Fundus examination of the right eye revealed massive submacular exudation in the macula and vascular changes in the temporal quadrant. The patient was treated with retinal photocoagulation and intravitreal injections of anti–VEGF agent (ranibizumab). As a results of implemented procedures there was reduction of macular exudates and abnormal vessels were destroyed. The state of patient’s visual organ was stable at the follow-up. Anti-VEGF therapy seems to be effective as a treatment in children with Coats’ disease.
