Summary: Mirror writing is one of the stages in the normal development of vision in children. This phenomenon may be caused by a disorder in a child’s development accompanying dyslexia or can be a consequence of left-handedness.
The aim of the study is to asses the factors regulating the frequency of the appearance of mirror writing in 6- and 7-years-old children.
Material and Methods: 289 children (150 girls and 139 boys) of the 1st class in elementary schools and kindergartens were studied. An original survey with graphic and typing tasks adapted to the ages of the children was used. A control group was created by eliminating some of the factors influencing the process, such as early writing and learning process difficulties.
Results: Vision correction was found in 24 children (8.3%) and 18 children (6.3%) were left-handed. Forty-one children (14.2%) had difficulties in learning, 192 (66.4%) started writing before kindergarten. Backward writing was found only in 5 children (1.7%) and 58 children (20.1%) inverted just one letter in a word. 11 children (3.8%) inverted the image while drawing. A statistically significant correlation between gender, early writing, learning process difficulties and mirror writing was observed.
Conclusions: Mirror writing occurs in 1 out of 5 children. It is difficult to indicate the exact moment it disappears in the population, as there are many factors influencing it. However, undoubtedly, the phenomenon decreases with age and the start of education.
