Early Optical Coherence Tomography Findings and Visual Outcomes after Scleral Buckling for Macula-off Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment

Summary: Purpose: To evaluate persistent submacular fluid and visual outcome in patients after successful scleral buckle surgery for macula-off retinal detachment.
Methods: Forty nine consecutive patients (49 eyes) who underwent successful encircling with scleral buckle were enrolled in the study. Each patient underwent thorough ophthalmologic examination, including best-corrected visual acuity assessment and spectral domain optical coherent tomography. They were divided into 2 groups: group 1, which consisted of 25 patients with persistent submacular fluid in spectral domain optical coherent tomography and group 2, with 24 patients without submacular fluid.
Results: There were 21 women (42.9%) and 27 men (57.1%) in mean age 55.6 (SD±17.6) years. Medium follow-up period was 2.5 months. The mean best-corrected visual acuity assessment was similar in both group 1 and group 2, but visual acuity of 0.5 or better was found in 62.5% of eyes in group 2, whereas in group 1 it was observed only in 48%.
Conclusions: In early postoperative stage after successful scleral buckle surgery for acute macula-off rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, the presence of submacular fluid did not influence mean visual acuity. However best-corrected visual acuity better than 0.5 was observed more often in patients without submacular fluid after surgery.
