Summary: The role of Demodex mites in ophthalmic lesions development as well as in ocular surface disturbances has not been fully recognized yet. These mites occur as commensales in skin glands, however , in favourable conditions, they may induce ophthalmic diseases or skin lesions. They are considered to take part in the development of chronic blepharitis, conjunctivitis as well as in corneal lesions of varied clinical status. There are many reports concerning ophthalmic demodecosis in adults, whereas in children these disturbances are mostly observed in the form of immunological system abnormalities. Many substances have been administered in the disease treatment, however, the healing process was long, arduous and most often non satisfactory. Hence, there are many investigations aiming at efficient preparations which might be successfully used in Demodex – evoked diseases.
