Summary: Purpose: To assess the distance best corrected visual acuity, subjective central visual function, foveal thickness and postoperative complications in patients with idiopathic epiretinal membranes treated by pars plana vitrectomy with internal limiting membrane peeling.
Material and methods: Twenty seven eyes/ 27 patients; 18 females and 10 males; mean age 69 ±7 yrs., with idiopathic epiretinal membranes were treated with 20 or 25 G pars plana vitrectomy with internal limiting membrane peeling using Brillant Peel and SF6 or C3F8 gas tamponade.
The mean follow-up time was 11 months (range: 6–36 months). Before and after surgery distance best corrected visual acuity, subjective central visual function, foveal thickness (Stratus OCT 3000, Carl Zeiss Meditec, Inc) and postoperative complications were assessed.
Statistical analysis of obtained results was performed. Significance level was equal p<0.05.
Results: Statistically significant improvement of distance best corrected visual acuity after surgery was noted. Median of distance best corrected visual acuity before vitrectomy was 0.2 and after was 0.4, p=0.002. After mean of two months subjective visual improvement (disappearance or reduced of metamorhopsy, better central visual function) was obtained in 24/27 eyes (88%).
Statistically significant reduction in foveal thickness after surgery was observed. Mean foveal thickness before vitrectomy was 501±113 µm and after was 390±103 µm (p=0.0003), respectively.
Serious complications were detected only in 2 eyes (7%) – retinal detachment.
Conclusions: In patients with idiopathic epiretinal membranes pars plana vitrectomy with internal limiting membrane peeling was very effective surgical procedure. Our results are consistant with other results described in the literature.
