Summary: Glaucoma is defined as a group of diseases with heterogeneous etiology that manifest as optic neuropathy, characterized by a progressive loss of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and their axons. Glaucoma causes characteristic morphological changes to the optic disc and results in associated visual field defects. Visual field testing with automated achromatic perimetry is considered to be the golden standard for glaucoma detection and monitoring but it is known that 20–30% of the retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) are lost before visual field abnormalities become apparent. Therefore, it is important to detect damage to the ganglion cells at an earlier stage, before any changes in visual field. Quantitative imaging techniques such as optical coherence tomography, scanning laser topography, and scanning laser polarymetry (GDx) are promising methods for objective anatomic diagnosis of glaucoma. The clinical usefulness of FD-OCT (OCT-RTVue) has been demonstrated in this paper.
